Joy Spring (in January)

It’s only mid-January and I’m already dreaming of spring and what I will plant in my garden. I love to flip through gardening catalogs and conjure up the possibilities. It also helps me stay warm - at least in my heart.   Last week, I started looking at urns, pots and planters online. My mum taught me that planting pots is very satisfying - you get results fast and you can move the plants around if they aren’t in the best spot. I was determined to find some classic urns for the patio; something that looked like they’d always been here. I looked at a million websites, weighing the pros and cons of material, weight, shape, height, capacity. I found out that you could spend some serious cash on this stuff. I was not going to do that.

Finally, I found exactly what I wanted at regular old Lowes - and  at a reasonable price.  They were exactly what I wanted, but they were HEAVY!  Wherever they were going to be placed, they were going to have to stay there. I’m getting old and I can’t keep hauling heavy stuff by myself (even though I think I can).

Today, when I got a text that the Lowe’s truck was on its way, my heart skipped a beat. I love getting packages delivered - even when it was me who ordered the goods.   I started to strategize how to get the urns as close to their intended resting place as best I could (did I mention they were heavy?).  I knew I could not talk the Lowe’s delivery guys into trudging into the backyard, but maybe I could get them to put the pots on the side of the house.

Except it was super icy and slippery today.

So, once I read the text, I hopped out the door, shoveled the walkway and salted the stoop.  Moments later the truck pulled up. I walked gingerly toward the truck and with my kindest voice (I had a mask on so I couldn't beguile them with my winning smile) I proceeded to talk the two burly dudes into placing the 60+ pound urns on to my front covered porch. They were reluctant at first, but when I showed them how I had salted the walk, they relented. As they walked up the path, they wore the urns like bonnets on their heads. It was kind of cute – and I thought I’d have to remember that trick when I move the pots to the backyard.

Now, every time I got out to the front porch, I will see these four urns – their presence : confirmation that spring is on it's way.

PS - click the link on the title and enjoy the music of Clifford Brown. Another small treat.

  1. I love the music that goes with the title. It fits with the your new urns perfectly. My brother-in-law had an equally happy day because he received his first Seed Catalog. His 2021 vegetable garden is becoming more than a dream. Soon his house will be full of little pots with little seedlings.
